HELP – The laptop fell down the stairs!

ICT and computers in general are one of the most undervalued resource in a business – that is until they go wrong. When they do go wrong the repercussions can be catastrophic, productivity is halted and your business is affected.

One way you can protect yourself, at work and home, is to make sure you are backing up your data. By data I mean things like documents, spreadsheets and photographs.

On inkjet printers and the perils of generic ink…

Most people have some type of inkjet printer in their home. They are cheap, easy to use and can produce quite stunning results.

The Biro and the soldering iron
A clever person, not that long ago, was sitting working with a soldering iron and set it down a bit too close to his Biro. The ‘nib’ heated up and the ink shot out. This was the birth of the inkjet printer. Another interesting snippet: the ink itself used to be more expensive than Chanel No.5.

“Someone’s been on the phone saying there’s a problem with my computer”

Firstly if you have fallen for this type of thing in the past, don’t be ashamed, they are masters at what they do and can be very convincing.  There are some very nasty people out there and they will do anything to make some money out of you. Simple tips – Why you should try switching it off and on again!

Let me debunk a myth, “Have you restarted your computer?”  Most people think that’s what IT companies say when they have no idea what’s wrong. It’s not true. The reason we say it to you is because it’s often the quickest way to get you running normally again.

Computers get confused too.

Imagine you were playing Scrabble. Ten minutes into the game you notice all the E’s and T’s are sitting on the sideboard. You could just try and add the letters back into the bag, but it would mean the game wasn’t quite right from the beginning. Your best option is to clear the board and start again. That is very much like a computer crash or software issue. Something went wrong and to fix it you need to start again. You could try closing the program (application) and re-opening, but just keep in mind that’s a bit like adding the missing letters half way through the game and may not solve the problem.

If there are any specific IT or computer problems you’d like us to include in this series, drop us a line and we’ll see what we can come up with.

Your Operating System (Windows) is a like a soup! A thick minestrone.
One of the most common complaints people make about their computer is that it’s slow. If your computer is over a year old it will start to slow down, but it doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with it and you can speed it up again – a bit anyway!
