“Someone’s been on the phone saying there’s a problem with my computer”
Firstly if you have fallen for this type of thing in the past, don’t be ashamed, they are masters at what they do and can be very convincing. There are some very nasty people out there and they will do anything to make some money out of you. Next time you get a phone call from anyone telling you that there is a problem with your computer or your internet connection we would recommend you hang up the phone and don’t give it a second thought.
What they want. What they really, really want!
Their ultimate goal is to get your credit card information. They trick or persuade you into giving up that information by getting access to your computer then holding it to ransom. Once they have access to your computer they can do all sorts of nasty things, then the cheeky little devils will make you pay them, to remove the problem they created in the first place. If you are worried or concerned about your computer or someone has managed to convince you to let them have access turn it off and bring it in.
Why would Microsoft phone me?
The person on the phone who interrupted your tea/bath/favourite TV show, does not work for Microsoft. Microsoft is a multi billion dollar company and I can promise you that unless you have phoned them for support or advice they do not spend their free time checking if your computer is performing as it should. Honestly just hang up the phone.
