Simple tips – Why you should try switching it off and on again!

Let me debunk a myth, “Have you restarted your computer?”  Most people think that’s what IT companies say when they have no idea what’s wrong. It’s not true. The reason we say it to you is because it’s often the quickest way to get you running normally again.

Computers get confused too.

Imagine you were playing Scrabble. Ten minutes into the game you notice all the E’s and T’s are sitting on the sideboard. You could just try and add the letters back into the bag, but it would mean the game wasn’t quite right from the beginning. Your best option is to clear the board and start again. That is very much like a computer crash or software issue. Something went wrong and to fix it you need to start again. You could try closing the program (application) and re-opening, but just keep in mind that’s a bit like adding the missing letters half way through the game and may not solve the problem.

Harmonise (46 points on a double word space) and restore normality.

I could befuddle you with jargon and whimsical tales of volatile RAM, process threads and leaky DLL’s, but normal (if there is such a thing) techie people generally don’t care about those things, all they want is their computer to work so they can do their job. Here are our tips for when to try a restart, and when to call for more help.

As the week has gone on the computer has got progressively slower.

Restart it.  Ideally restart your computer every day. If no better give us a call.

An application crashed with an error message, but it usually works fine. Try restarting the application, if that doesn’t help restart your computer. If it happens again try to get a screen shot of the error or leave the error message on the screen and phone for help.

I can’t connect to my network drives or access my files. This could be a sign of bigger issues.  Restarting first makes your computer try to connect to your network again. If it still doesn’t work phone for help.
