Simple Tips #3 – Changing Your Broadband

Changing your home internet service provider is a fairly simple process. Changing your business broadband is a different matter.

Planning ahead can help you avoid potentially costly issues.

Unlike a home network, business networks usually have servers and company email domains.  Poor planning can leave your business with no email or internet access for several days. Here is a quick list of things to think about before you make the change.

Email address

Companies tend to have their own email domain name ie fred@businessname.co.uk instead of fred@sky.co.uk.  These domain names can be linked to your current internet service provider and changing provider means a loss of email address.  These domains can be transferred to another service but it takes time and is worth doing before you change your broadband.

Router

A router is the device that connects your computer to the internet.  These devices normally come pre-programmed by the ISP (Internet Service Provider).  Plugging in a standard router on to a business network can cause havoc and stop your network devices being able to connect to each other.   Avoid issues by getting your new router configured for your network before you plug it in.

Static IP Address

Think of your IP Address as a postal address for your business on the internet.   You may need to request a Static IP address from your service Provider. This can save you a lot of problems especially if you have people who connect into your network from home or off site.
